George Dog Painting by Mandy Gatlin

'George' Dog Painting by Mandy Gatlin
Acrylic on Canvas

One of my favorite things to do is paint people's pets!
Meet George!
I loved the photo his owner captured of him sunbathing on the chair. And George has such a look of serene alertness... like "I'm loving this spot on the chair, but did you just put a chip in your mouth without sharing..." ;-)
It was fun to capture the light shining on George and the chair. I loved how the shadows were dancing in this one. Everything about this image of George made me smile... the way his paw was stuck between the cushions, how his paws were dangling over, the way he's tucked into the chair with the colorful pillow on the side. And what's not to love about that look on his face!
I also played with a texture medium to add depth and interest to this painting. Here's the video of the making of this painting of George:

Purple Ocean Painting by Mandy Gatlin

Purple Ocean Painting by Amanda 'Mandy' Gatlin
Size 20" X 48" Acrylic on 3 Panel Canvas Painting

Playing with colors and light in this abstract purple ocean painting. Is the sun setting or rising? I like to think it is forever dancing and showing off! I'm sure this painting is inspired by all the sunrises and sunsets by the ocean I have witnessed in my lifetime. There is something so magical and ritual about watching the sun on the ocean. Perhaps it has something to do with the display of colors... or maybe it's something spiritual... I'm usually lost in those moments and wanting the colors to never end.

Abstract Coastline

Abstract Coastline by Amanda 'Mandy' Gatlin
Size 16" x 20" Acrylic on Canvas Painting

It's Friday! Can you believe it's already December 1st?!? Where did the year go? I'm in the studio today working on more ocean abstract paintings. Had fun replicating all the different textures, waves, sand pulled back by the water, the little white foamy bubbles left on the beach, the smooth sand and the more coarse sand. Many of my paintings have been displaying "thresholds" lately... beach meeting the water, ocean meeting the skyline, etc... Threshold can mean a few different things... crossing through a doorway... and also that moment when something is changing and manifested... What threshold are you walking through right now?

Abstract Waves by Amanda Gatlin

Abstract Waves by Amanda 'Mandy' Gatlin
Size 48" x 28" Acrylic on Canvas

Inspired by watching ocean waves crashing. Patterns of blues, greens and white acrylic paint on canvas. I love how this one reminds me of misty mountains or of Earth with swirling clouds and ocean taken from space! It could be hung vertical or horizontal. The paint is laid on thick and there is a lot of depth to this painting.

This abstract waves painting came out in layers. Here's a video of the creation:

Water Immersion by Amanda Gatlin

Water Immersion by Amanda 'Mandy' Gatlin
3 Panels totaling 90" x 40" Acrylic on Canvas

This ocean painting came through nudgings, a knowing that it needed to be 3 panels, painted with acrylics chunked on thick and then smoothed out to reveal layers of blue, black, green, teal and turquoise. A living, breathing sea in motion revealing a storm in the background. This painting brings me back to my childhood days of fishing on open ocean.

I also woke up one morning knowing I would need a "painter's cloth" to lay on the ground to paint this painting. Most of them had been done on a table. When I went to buy a large canvas, that's when I got the feeling it needed to be three canvases and all very large. As I painted it with my hands, and smoothed out the paint, I felt like I was making water. It was quite fun!

Girl in a Field of Dandelions

Girl in a Field of Dandelions
24" x 24" Acrylic on Canvas

My niece was the inspiration for this painting. Her mom captured a photo of her in a field of dandelions and when I saw the photo, I knew it needed to be painted. I love the innocence it displays. She is a nature lover by heart and it's fun to capture her enjoying blowing the dandelion puffs on a sunny day.
